WHAT IS AAUW?
The American Association of University Women, founded in 1881, is a national organization of 160,000college graduates working to promote education and equity for all women and girls. AAUW is affiliated with graduates in 67 countries through the International Federation of University Women (IFUW). AAUW is California’s most active and diverse organization for women, with 30,000 members in 170 local branches.
The Thousand Oaks Branch supports AAUW through programs, community action, public policy advocacy and fundraising, while providing members with opportunities for personal growth, intellectual stimulation, community involvement, leadership, networking, friendships and fun.
AAUW PRIORITIES
EDUCATIONAL FOUNDATION (EF)
AAUW’S Educational Foundation provides funds to advance education, research and self-development for women. Established in 1888, EF is the nation’s oldest and one of the largest non-institutional sources of funding for education and research for women, awarding $2.6 million annually. The Thousand Oaks Branch support EF through fundraising and member donations and, for over 30 years, has provided scholarships for local students.
LEGAL ADVOCACY FUND (LAF)
The AAUW Legal Advocacy Fund provides funding and a support system for women seeking judicial redress for sex discrimination. Established in 1981, LAF is the largest legal fund focused solely on gender discrimination and harassment in academia. The Thousand Oaks Branch supports LAF through fundraising and member donation.
THE AAUW INITIATIVE FOR
EDUCATIONAL EQUITY
In 1991, AAUW launched a long-tern effort to eliminate gender bias in America’s schools. Since then, AAUW has gained national attention through several publications including How Schools Shortchange Girls, Hostile Hallways-The AAUW Survey on Sexual Harassment in American Schools and Girls in the Middle-Working to Succeed in School. AAUW’s most recent study, Tech-Savvy: Educating Girls in the New Computer Age focuses on gender equity in technology. The Thousand Oaks Branch has supported the initiative through Educational Equity Roundtables with local educational and civic leaders. "Equitable Schools" training for teachers and a speaker’s bureau to educate the community.
AAUW PUBLIC POLICY PROGRAM
AAUW seeks to involve women in every level of the political process and actively supports legislation promoting educational equity and diversity in public schools, pay equity, reproductive choice, childcare, school-based health care, civil rights and responsible funding for public education.
MEMBERSHIP
Membership in AAUW is open to all graduates holding a baccalaureate or higher degree from a regionally accredited college or university. Undergraduates currently enrolled at a regionally accredited two- or four-year institution may join as Student Affiliates. When you join the Thousand Oaks Branch, you also join AAUW California, the Association (National) and the International Federation of University Women (IFUW).
